Indian Pitta (Pitta brachyura) is bird native to Indian subcontinent with distinct loud whistling call. It breeds in the forests of Himalayas and central India and migrates to south India during winter. It is usually seen in the dense undergrowth of forests and plantations forage on insects. The bird gets the name from the Telugu word Pitta meaning small bird and known as Kavi in Kerala. The key characters to identify this colorful bird are bold black eye stripe complementary with white throat and neck, dull yellow underparts and reddish-pink lower belly and vent. It is known as a shy bird, occasionally disoriented with light and jointly calls with its neighboring individuals at dawn or dusk.
