Community Botanical Garden Development Campaign

We are trying to reach out as many well-wishers as possible who have commitments in conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. The Campaign aims to conserve all the Rare, Endemic and Threatened (RET) plant species of Wayanad and adjoining region as well as on-farm conservation of the remaining genetic diversity in crop plants and the crop wild relatives (CWRs). There are 100 Custodian Farmers involved in this Campaign by sharing 100 acres together to promote conservation of the estimated number of 1200 endangered wild plant species and over 300 vanishing Farmers’ varieties in diverse cultivated crops of the Western Ghats. The outcome of this campaign will be integrated conservation of valuable genetic materials which have potential to use for agriculture research and development.

Our Successes:

  • For 20 years the MSSBG has unified tribes, communities, students and government to save hundreds of rain forest species for future generations.
  • We have nursed back many species thought to be extinct, helped tribes and families profit from their small farms, found new value to native varieties of rice and yams, and raised climate resilience of the farming systems, and increased awareness of the importance of conservation and sustainable consumption;
  • Put simply, MSSBG is de-risking a future that climate change is making increasingly uncertain!
